Shroomolluscs are a species of molluscs, native to the planet Fungaia.

Biology and appearance

Shroomollusc are large molluscs with soft, bouncy shells on their backs. Though they possess some defensive abilities, they are typically docile and shy creatures which quickly retreat into their shells when threatened. They come in many different colours, and often have leafy or moss-like textures covering their skin and shells. Their bodies are wet and slimy, like those of most molluscs. Unlike many other Fungaian creatures, however, shroomolluscs do not produce spores, and are not aggressive.

Shroomolluscs feed mainly on moss and other vegetation and are sometimes considered pests by villages of kuparkukes and scufflepaws. Scufflepaws are not particularly fond of eating them, but kuparkukes will happily gather them from their farms and carry them back to their villages as food. Their soft shells are also useful and are often repurposed as furniture, tools, or even worn as hats.

Strengths

Shroomolluscs are not known to have many biological advantages of their own, serving mainly as prey for other creatures, particularly kuparkukes and large birds. Their soft shells are their primary form of protection against fungus beasts; they blend into the natural environment, and provide them a place of safety to retreat into when threatened. A layer of slime covering their bodies helps keep them moist during the heat of summer sadly for them, this also attracts kuparkukes.

Weaknesses

Shroomolluscs are walking treats for kuparkukes and other large predators. Kuparkukes especially enjoy them when they are moist and juicy, as these are considered healthy. Drier shroomolluscs are less nutritious, but can still serve as a crunchy snack. Their soft bodies and shells offer little protection, aside from helping them blend into their surroundings. They are fragile and incapable of defending themselves.

Role in Star Heretic

Shroomolluscs appear in Star Heretic as early-game creatures. They are passive and do not go out of their way to harm the player, being more interested in going about their own business. Players can interact with them in several ways: they can be attacked, jumped on, or have their shells picked up. These shells can be used to reach higher areas, or even as projectiles. Regardless of interaction, shroomolluscs cannot fight back, except for the cave variation.

They can be scanned to add their details to the codex.
